The ingredients are pretty simple:
- Ice
- 1 oz Hendricks Gin
- 1 oz Lillet Blanc
- 1 oz Aperol
- Grapefruit peel for garnish
Fill up a shaker with ice; add the gin, the Lillet Blanc, and the Aperol. Give it a hearty shake and strain into an ice-filled old fashioned glass. Twist the grapefruit peel over the drink to release the oils, plop the peel into the drink, and bottoms up.
I could definitely taste the relationship to a Negroni, but this wasn't quite as bitter. The Hendricks was a nice addition, but I might try a regular London Dry next time (this house enjoys Plymouth), but I'm happy with the way this came out.
I made something similar to this once, and I think I might have liked it a little better than a real Negroni, because I admit I like it a little bit sweet. I like the way Aperol has just enough bitterness to make everything taste sort of grapefruity. Try putting a bit of Aperol in a glass of champagne. Tastes like grapefruit soda ;-) I tried yet another thing along these lines that used Dolin Blanc Vermouth instead of Lillet, and that was a bit TOO sweet, and didn't have as much citrus tang.
ReplyDeleteWe've already decided that on our next trip to Trader Joe's, we're going to try to pick up a case of cheap champagne/sparkling wine! I definitely want to try the Aperol/champagne mix.

ReplyDeleteHi. 2018 and this is after my first try at Cheeky Negroni. Love it. Love it so much that I want to spew out advices!
ReplyDeleteUse crushed ice in the glass. This works best for most cocktails, including this one.
Pour the alcohol over ice in a strainer, but DON'T shake it! Just pour it over and then strain it into to ice-filled serving glass. It just needs to blend and cool down. No extra water than that from the ice in the serving glass.
Add freshly squeezed orange juice to the serving glass before pouring over the alcohol. Or try grapefruit juice. I have only experience with the orange juice and that works really well!
For a visual and slight zest, add a twig of fresh rosemary to the glass, preferrably slightly bruised to bring out the scent.
Enjoy in small sips or through a straw. Cheers!
